Ernie Els Courses Open for Play
Oubaai at Herold's Bay, South Africa (photo above)
You could scarcely wish for a more dramatic location on which to create a golf course and Oubaai was designed to maximize the impact of its natural, rugged and beautiful surroundings. With views that take in forest, sea, river and mountain, Oubaai is a spectacular assault on the senses. It’s like nothing else in South Africa. It opened for play in 2004.
The Els Club, Dubai
The Els Club is part of the $3 billion Dubai Sports City. The course measures 7,538 yards and is a ‘desert links’ with a natural look and feel; a combination of a links and traditional ‘classical era’ design. It features broad, gently rolling fairways, steep greenside bunkers, grassy swales and imaginatively designed greens. It opened for play in April 2008.
Savannah at Mission Hills, Shenzhen, China
The Ernie Els-designed Savannah course at Mission Hills measures over 7,000 yards and sits in a parkland style environment that meanders through a pristine river basin. Mission Hills is the home of golf in China and has 10 championship courses; Ernie’s layout opened for play in 2002.
Hoakalei, Hawaii
This Ernie Els signature design forms part of the prestigious new world-class Hoakalei Country Club. This spectacular golf course reflects the scenic splendour of O’ahu; it features beautifully landscaped and manicured conditions and follows the natural landscape to the Ewa coastline, offering expansive views. It opened for play in January 2009.
Anahita Golf Resort, Mauritius
Anahita is located on the east coast of the island and incorporates a tranquil atmosphere within a five-star setting. The golf course is beautifully complemented by surrounding lagoons and breathtaking mountain backdrops. Anahita opened for play in March 2008.
Gardener Ross Golf & Country Estate, Gauteng, South Africa
Gardener Ross is situated 20km from Pretoria on a plot of land where Ernie’s late grandfather, Ernie Vermaak grew up. The course is designed in such a way as to utilise the natural features of the landscape. In 2008 South African magazine Compleat Golfer voted Gardener Ross the best new golf course in Gauteng. It opened for play in December 2007.
West Course, Wentworth, England
Harry Colt designed Wentworth’s famed West Course in the 1920s. Since 2005 Ernie Els has been involved in an ongoing process of modernisation and refinement, including extensive re-bunkering and lengthening. All greens and green surrounds will be re-built to USGA specification in 2009.
Whiskey Creek, Maryland, United States
This design collaboration between Ernie Els and architect J. Michael Poellet represented Ernie’s introduction into golf course design; an 18-hole layout featuring dramatic elevation changes, outstanding views, rock outcroppings and attractive yet strategic water features. The course opened for play in 2000.
